Hoshizaki KM2500SRH3 Ice Machine Evaporator Freezing Up – Leaking Water

Arrived at the location to find the ice machine’s evaporators were completely frozen up. The evaporator plates were a solid block of ice and water was splashing into the ice bin. Turned the unit off to allow the ice to melt overnight and explained to the customer the severity of the ice buildup. Returned to location and found all ice had melted off the evaporator plates. Customer had explained that unit had recently been installed and should still be under warranty. Began my diagnoses and the first thing I noticed was the shipping tape had not been removed and was still inside on all the components. Removed all the shipping tape and tested operation. I was unable to find any problems with water flow over the evaporator or the water filling cycle. Also, removed the float valve and checked to be sure it was clear of debris and moving freely.

The ice machine freeze time was approximately 35 minutes. During the harvest cycle the water valve properly filled the reservoir and the water pressure was normal. Confirmed all the water components were installed correctly. Watched a second batch of ice and tested the bin thermostat to be sure the unit would shut off when contacted with ice. It performed properly and no other problems found. I explained to the client that the issues would not be covered under the factory warranty as it was an installation problem. After some further discussion the client agreed and payment was collected. I stayed a bit longer to double-check water connections and drains, to be sure all installation items were done correctly. Found small drip at water valve on wall. Tightened a little more to stop drip. No other problems found. Recommend joining our maintenance program to have unit regularly cleaned and inspected.
